Matisse was a French visual artist, known for his use of colour. The intense colourism of the works he painted between 1900 and 1905 brought him notoriety as one of the Fauves (French for "wild beasts"). This image was created in 1905 as an oil on canvas. The technique was mostly with quick, sketchy brushstrokes and sometimes using paint directly from the tube. He did leave parts of the canvas unpainted, so that its raw, woven surface shows through between his brushstrokes,
